Story behind the song
Had a conversation with a friend about a recent race, and their son had broken free from his wife and entered the race after him. Thankfully, his wife was able to catch up to the boy before he was trampled by other runners, but they ended up completing the 5K course to laugh about it later. But the poignant hidden message for a Christian cannot be lost here. Our children, and others we come in contact with, may look up to us and want to follow us as we run this race. As they are looking to us, we need to run well, or we will lead them into the ditch.
Lyrics
A friend of mine had lunch with me At a downtown public eatery Found a table with our drinks and sat Waited for our food with a friendly chat I asked about his recent race And he got a strange look upon his face And said that at the starting gun He took off on that 5K run Chorus: “But I didn’t know my little boy Was running after me He had broken from his mother’s arms And he’d joined the company I was focused on that finish line Hoping for a record time Running forward unaware He was running after me. As the food arrived I said a prayer For the meal and my friend sitting there And the fact that his boy was safe At the finish line of the 5K race There’s a moral to that story there Do we run through this life unaware Of the ones who follow where we go Will we lead them well or off the road Chorus (2x): Will I realize that other ones Are running after me? Will they follow me to Jesus Will I lead them faithfully? Will they see me read the Word and pray Keep my eyes on You and sin at bay Oh Lord remind me every day They’re running after me.
